MPCA Extends Comment Period for Draft 2014 Impaired Waters List

MPCAThe Minnesota Pollution Contral Agency (MPCA) has extended the comment period for the draft 2014 Impaired Waters List through February 11, 2014. The comment period was originally slated to close at the end of January 2014. All written comments the MPCA receives will be sent to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) along with the MPCA's responses. The MPCA's final draft Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) list and accompanying documentation is also subject to federal review and approval.

The 2014 draft Impaired Waters List includes the TMDL impairments that require "clean-up" studies under section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act. It also includes a list of inventory waters with completed TMDLs that have not yet been restored, "non-pollutant" impairments, and impairments due to natural sources. The watersheds included in the 2014 list include Cannon, Lake of the Woods, Lake Superior – South, Leech Lake, Little Sioux, Long Prairie, Lower Big Sioux, Nemadji, Red Lake, Red River - Grand Marais Creek, Redeye, Rock, Pine, Sandhill, South Fork Crow, Thief, Upper Big Sioux, and Zumbro.
