GRAND FORKS DATA SYSTEM WINS ENGINEERING AWARD
5/18/2009
The City of Grand Forks, ND sprung into action when its mobile communication network was unable to keep up with the increased demand for data flow. The former network consisted of several independent systems which enabled data to be transferred within the City, including police and fire department communications, remote control of public works infrastructure such as the pumps supplying water to the City, and several other critical flows of information.
The City retained the team of Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. (AE2S) and Elert and Associates to design a single, city-wide mobile data system, dubbed the Broadband Backbone Interconnect and Wireless Mobile Data System. The new system has been successfully operating for a little over a year, providing fast, reliable access to data for City employees.
The project earned recognition from the North Dakota Council of Engineering Companies (NDCEC) in the form of an Engineering Excellence Award in the Building/Technology Systems category. The purpose of these awards is to recognize innovation, expertise, and achievements in engineering throughout the state.
