City, Local Company and Firm Earn Honors for Siltation Solutions
4/1/2003
Siltation build-up along the face of the existing intake feeding the Mandan Water Treatment Plant was becoming a recurring problem for the City of Mandan and Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company, joint owners of the intake. Sediment accumulation severely limits the ability of the intake structure to receive water. In response, the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE) issued permits for "maintenance dredging" over the past few years, but with the last permit issued, the COE mandated that a study be completed to assess the siltation problem before further permits would be issued.
In the spring of 2002, the team of Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc. (AE2S) and Black and Veatch was selected to conduct the required study which investigated the potential cause of the sediment deposition at the intake, identified pertinent environmental implications, and examined alternatives and their associated costs.
This effort, the “Missouri River Intake Siltation Solutions” was recently awarded the North Dakota Consulting Engineers Council (NDCEC) Engineering Excellence Award. The award celebrates projects that benefit communities by utilizing new applications and innovation and have a positive social or economic impact, as well as projects that add technical value to the engineering profession and/or are complex in nature.
